Boston Daily Times is first published.

February 16, 1836

It is published from offices on State Street. In its first editorial, the newspaper declares, “the newspapers of this country, at the present juncture, hold the balance of power between virtue and vice.” Despite the sentiments expressed, the paper focuses on covering the police court. The first of the successful “pennies” (penny newspapers), its importance, according to an account in 1882, lay in “placing the daily news in the hands of the humblest and poorest citizens.” The newspaper continues until sold to the Boston Herald on April 23, 1857.
